The hinge group of door accessories is presented in the market in a wide assortment. Let's try to understand the whole variety of loops and why invoices are so popular. Since installing “butterfly” hinges on interior doors does not require knowledge of complex technological processes, this material will be especially useful for beginners.
Popular types of canopies
Awnings for interior doors belong to the main elements of the door system. Without them, the entire structure can be considered useless. Today, the trading network presents numerous types of loops with different characteristics. Therefore, before buying, you need to determine the type and function that the door leaf will perform, as well as the direction of opening.
Butterfly Overheads
This type of canopy has a simple structure and is easily installed on the door leaf of interior doors. The appearance of the canopies resembles the wings of a butterfly in an open form.
Mortise card
Relate to the most common types of loops. They consist of two parts that are attached to the structure with simple wood screws. They are buried in the end of the sash with screws. Hinges are divided into universal, right and left. Therefore, when buying canopies, you need to know which way the door will open.
The universal type of loop has two pairs of bearings. They are used on all wings. They have a long service life.
Corner
Used in door systems with a narthex. Corner plates are not attached to the central axis.
This design cuts into the door end and is strengthened with self-tapping screws. Corner products provide the door with a dense vestibule.
Hidden
They have a high degree of protection against “uninvited guests”. Concealed constructions with a door closer are installed directly on the sash and frame. For this, recesses of considerable depth are cut out at the installation site. They are used mainly for entrance doors.
Installation of a door with a fusion provides masking of fasteners, aesthetic appearance and excludes cutting of hinges from the outside.
Screw
This type is significantly different from other analogues. He does not have the usual wings on the awnings, and the pins are screwed directly into the wooden door frame and sash. Only the hinge remains visible. Screw hinges are usually mounted on doors with a seam cut.
They are not recommended to be placed on structures made of soft and low-grade wood materials. Otherwise, distortions, cracks and a violation of the structure of the web may appear.
Bilateral
They are installed on doors in places with high traffic.
In their design, they resemble card loops with three plates. On one of them on the sides are two rotation axes.
Overhead loops: features and installation
They belong to the card type of loops and consist of two plates and a hinge. Opened plates look like butterfly wings, and when closed, one “wing” enters the hole in the second half of the canopy. Thus, one plane is obtained, which becomes invisible. They are easy to install and do not require the selection of wood from the door structure.
For installation, an accurate selection of self-tapping screws is required. The screws must be hidden in special grooves of the plates. Correctly selected fittings will not prevent the sash from closing.
Since the “butterflies” have an openwork design and are made of thin material, they are not advised to mount on heavy reinforced doors.
There are two options for canopies: on the door with a vestibule and classic. In the first design, a bend of the plate is provided, which provides a tight door closure.
Advantages of the plates:
- have an aesthetic appearance;
- do not require special tools for installation work;
- the rotary mechanism practically does not break.
Butterfly loops do not belong to ideal mechanisms and have their drawbacks.
Disadvantages of awnings:
- fastenings are designed only for a perfectly flat cloth;
- low-quality metal material contributes to the deformation of the product under the weight of the door;
- it is impossible to remove the door from the awnings. Only by unscrewing the screws, is it possible to replace the blade.
Correct installation of loops without insert
Today, slack mounting remains in demand among consumers, which means that step-by-step instructions for installing canopies without forming a groove will make this process accessible to everyone.
To hang the sash on the doorway, the appropriate fittings are selected. Traditional hardware includes butterfly overhead loops.
The following tools will be required to complete the work:
- stationery knife;
- drill or screwdriver;
- self-tapping screws;
- drill.
Installation technology:
- Markup. First you need to determine the place where the mount will be installed. It is mounted on all wings the same way: from the extreme cut in the lower and upper parts of the canvas at a distance of 200 ─ 250 mm.
Tape measure the starting point of attachment. We mark the places of screwing in the screws. To do this, use an awl, since the pencil will get a fuzzy look. They push through the point from which the self-tapping screw does not go aside. First, the upper and lower points are outlined. If a loop shift occurs, then the middle holes will correct the wizard error.
- Fastening the hinge to the door leaf. It is not recommended to screw the screws into the product immediately. First you need to drill shallow holes in the places for screws. Use a drill in diameter 1 mm less than the diameter of the self-tapping screw. If the diameter of a standard self-tapping screw is 3.5 mm, then a drill with a diameter of 2.5 mm is used for the hole.
A canopy is attached and screws are screwed (upper and lower). The reciprocal level leans back. The gaps between the edges of the mount and the web should be the same.If an error occurs in the installation, one screw must be unscrewed and the loop adjusted. Then the correction takes place using the middle holes. For an average self-tapping screw, we also drill a hole into which a screw is driven. We are convinced of the correctness of strengthening the canopy and continue to drive the rest of the screws into the holes.
- Marking on the box. Awnings are best installed when the duct is not yet mounted in the doorway. But if this has already happened, then the installation of the hinges on the interior doors is done using wedges-stands.
If everything is combined, go to the next stage of work. We make marks on the canopies on the box.We remove the canvas to the side.
- The “butterfly” hinge is attached to the door leaf with a small gap, and should be tightly attached to the duct.
- We apply and push the outer holes with an awl.
- We drill holes for screws and screw them.
- Check the work for errors. If they are not found, then screw in the remaining screws.
Mortise models: types and installation
Mortise hinges look like overhead canopies with a card structure. The difference is in the method of attachment and split plates.
Popular types of loops:
- Brass. They have an aesthetic appearance and are in great demand. There are two types of sheds in the trading network ─ chrome and polished.
- Brassed. They are made from the material of several alloys. To give an aesthetic appearance using brass, bronze and gold spraying.
- Steel. The most reliable and high-quality type of mount. They are not subject to grinding, therefore they have a long service life. To preserve the aesthetic appearance of the canvas, they are cut into the end of the door frame. The recess and recess configuration correspond to the thickness and shape of the plates.
Insert hinges in interior doors
To insert hinges into the interior doors with your own hands, you will need canopies, a chisel, a hammer, screws, a screwdriver, a pencil for marking, tape measure, wooden wedges and a building level.
- Marking and cutting grooves. All canopies are installed at the same distance from the upper and lower edges of the sash: 200 ─ 250 mm. Before installing the mount, carefully inspect the installation site. Eliminate knots and chips, since when screwing in the screws, a box-shaped beam can split and self-tapping screws are skewed.
- First, attach the mount to the sash and mark its size with a pencil.
Then, with a chisel with a hammer, all the contour lines of the marking of the nest for the awnings are tapped. Incisions are made along the length, a chisel is gently knocked to the side and a seat is obtained. In the same way we make the second deepening. It can be done with a home milling cutter, into which an ordinary grooving cutter is inserted.
We insert the canopy into the nest and fix it with screws.
- Marking on a box beam. If the box is installed, and the lock is already inserted in the casement, this will facilitate the work. Under the door you need to substitute the bars and with the help of the building level bring it to level "0". Marks are made in the places of contact of the canopies with the box beam. It is difficult to make the marks correctly, therefore it is recommended to remove the door canopies, precisely draw the contour lines on the box and put them back in place. Seating is done in the same way as on the door leaf. Then we bring the door to the finished box beam, hold it with wedges and fix it with screws.
Check the door for opening and closing. On the interior doors you can put a seal, which can be a contour, fire and threshold.
Work is done!
